Born in Homerton,London in 1897. He was christened on 02/04/1897 in Hackney St John.
His parents were Arthur Charles Gristley(1875-1926) and Francis Julia Marler(1870-1960). they were married on 08/02/1897.
George had a brother called William Thomas(1908-1937) and 3 sisters; Susan Frances(01/10/1899-1970),
Frances Emma(1902-1927) and
Kate Mary(16/07/1905-1982).
In the 1901 census the family were recorded as living at
1 John Street, Hackney ,London. Arthur was employed as a brewers carman.
In the 1911 census,the family had moved to 5 Ribstone Street, Homberton,Hackney,London. Arthur was a general labourer in the building industry and George was working as a
machine hand.
He enlisted in London and his date of disembarkation into France was on 27/07/1915.
He was killed in action on 01/07/1916.
He was awarded the 1914 -1915 star,
the 1914-1918 British War and Allied Victory medals.
