2976 2nd Lieutenant  Percy Francis Gethin

Born on 25/07/1874 in Bagenalstown, Carlow, Ireland.

His parents were Captain George Gethin(1836-14/08/1913) and Mabel Connellan(1846-05/04/1934).

They were married on 05/10/1870. 

He had 3 brothers;

Arthur Percy(28/06/1871-30/11/1871),

Randolph George(28/06/1871-21/06/1945)

and Reginald Owen(07/10/1877-18/12/1899).

 

In 1899,his brother Reginald who was in the British South African Police died whilst serving with the army in South Africa.In his memory Percy did a painting of the altarpiece of the Cathedral of St Mary and St John in Silgo,Ireland.

 

The only census record that I have been able to find for Percy is from 1911 and he is living at

4 Colquitt Street,Liverpool. His occupation was

artist - painter at Liverpool School of Arts.

He enlisted as a Private(2976) into the 28th Battalion, London Regiment and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion Devonshire Regiment on 29/03/1915.

His date of disembarkation into France was

December 1915.

He was killed in action on 28/06/1916 during the preliminary bombardment for the battle of the Somme.

In his will read on 11/11/1916, it gave Percy's home address as 50 Rochester Row,Westminster,Middlesex, London.Probate was granted to Herbert Leith Murray M.D. and Frederick Vango Burridge, principal of Central School of Arts & Craft. His effects were £11452 15s 7d

 (worth today £ 1,120,468.77).
