10501 Private William Henry Gough

Born in Newton Abbot,Devon in 1879.

His parents were Frank Gough(1859-1903) and

Emma Jane Randall Puddicombe(1861-1912).

They were married in 1879.

William had a brother; Frederick(1889-1929) and 6 Sisters;

Ellen(born in 1880),Emma(born in 1884),

Florence(18/01/1883-1980),Annie(born in 1885),

Frances Mary(1886-1958) and Jessie(born in 1894). 

In the 1881 census,the family are recorded as living at

No.7 Court, 6 Welborough Street,Newton Abbot.  Frank was employed as a carter.

In the 1891 census,the family had moved to

No.2 Court,3 East Street,Newton Abbot where they would remain for the next 20 years. Frank was now employed as a general labourer.

In the 1901 census, Frank was still a general labourer as now was William; something that he would still be doing come the 1911 census.    

William enlisted in Exeter and his date for disembarkation into France was on 25/07/1915.

He was killed in action on 01/07/1916.

He was awarded the 1914-1915 Star,the 1914-1918 British War and Allied Victory medals.

The Western Times - Friday 28 July 1916- "Another Newtonian killed in action on July 1st was Pte W.H.Gough,

the news having been received by his sister Mrs(Florence)Chapple (1 Court, 4 Woolborough Street)Newton Abbot.

Pte Gough was in the Devons. He was 38 years of age,unmarried".
