Born in Worlington, Devon in 1895.

His parents were Henry John Hitchcock(born in 1860) and Lucy Hammett. They were married in 1886.

Alfred had 2 brothers; Henry Harold(born in 1888) and

Walter John(1889-06/04/1942). He also had 2 sisters;

Lucy Lavina(born in 1890) and Winifred(born in 1891).

In the 1901 census the farm are recorded as living at

Pedley Cottage,East Worlington ,Morchard Bishop Devon. Henry Hitchcock was working as a horseman on a farm.

In the 1911 census,Alfred had left home and is living and working as a  horseman on a farm at Cuddenhay,

West Worlington, Morchard Bishop, Devon.

 

He enlisted in Exeter and his date of disembarkation into France was on 25/07/1915.

He was killed in action on 01/07/1916.

He was awarded the  1914-1915 Star,

the 1914-1918 British War and Allied Victory medals.
