Born in Talaton Devon in 1898.
His parents were John Ash(1863-1903) and
Bessie Berry(1869-1953). They married in 1892.
John had a brother,William(born in 1902) and 3 sisters; Bessie Alice(31/03/1893-1988,
Elizabeth Ellen(13/04/1984-1978) and Rose(1899-1912).
In the 1901 census the family were recorded as living at
Moor Talaton Devon and John snr. was employed as an agricultural labourer.
In the 1911 census, John jnr was living and working at Cawley Farm Wiggaton, Ottery St Mary Devon.
He enlisted in Exeter and his date of disembarkation into France was on 14/09/1915. He was killed in action on 01/07/1916.
He was awarded the 1914-1915 Star,
the 1914-1918 British War and Allied Victory medals.
