Born in Berry Pomeroy Devon in 1896.
His parents were Henry Potter(1866-1949) and Fanny Ann Tremlett(1861-1911).
William had a brother John Tremlett(1892-1938) and a sister Thirza(1895-06/01/1965).
In the 1901 census the family were recorded as living at Weston Cottage, Berry Pomeroy, Devon. Henry Potter was a carpenter on a farm.
In the 1911 census,the family had moved to
Gatcombe Mill, Littlehampton, Devon. Henry was now a farmer and William was working as a domestic gardener.
He enlisted in Newton Abbot, Devon and was killed in action on 01/07/1916.
No record of the medals he was awarded can be found.
His death was announced in the
Western Times - Saturday 22 July 1916 edition;
"Pte William Henry Potter son of Mr Potter of
Gatcombe Totnes who was in the Devonshire Regiment has been killed in action. He was 20 years of age".
