20018 Private Ernest John Stabb

Born in 1890 in Kenton Devon.

His parents were John Stabb(1849-1892) and

Sarah Ann Lamorcraft(1855-1940). They married in 1878.

Ernest had 2 brothers; George Frederick(born in 1879) and William Henry(born in 1892).

He also had 3 sisters; Helen Julia(born in 1881),

Alice Maud Mary(born in 1885) and Florence B (1887-1952).

In the 1891 census the family were recorded as living at Mafford Cottages, Kenford,Exminster, Devon. John was employed as an agricultural labourer.

The 1901 census showed that following the death of John, the family had now moved to the Wares Buildings, St Thomas ,Exeter. Devon. Sarah Ann was now working as a cook.

In the 1911 census, the family were still living in the

Wares Buildings(no.10). Sarah Ann was employed as a charwoman,whilst Ernest was working as a groom.  

In 1912 Ernest married Maud Chamberlain(20/11/1887-1947) and they had a son (Ernest William (18/05/1915-1980).

He enlisted in Exeter and his date of disembarkation into France was on  16/12/1915.

He was killed in action on 01/07/1916.

He was awarded the 1914-1915 Star,

the 1914-1918 British War and Allied Victory medals.

His wife Maud was awarded a pension of 15/- a week from 22/01/1917.

At the time of his death, the family were living at

10 Edmund Street, Exeter,Devon.
