20156 Private Henry David Inight

8th(Service)Battalion

Devonshire Regiment

1st July 1916

Born on 08/03/1898 in St Giles London.

His parents were William Inight(1869-1911) and

Ada Louisa Black(born on 29/04/1873).

They married in 1897.

Henry had 2 brothers; William H (1897-1902) and

Edward Ernest(23/11/1908-1955).

He also had 2 sisters Florence Louisa(17/12/1903-1906) and Dorothy Evelyn(17/06/1905-1988).

In the 1901 census the family are recorded as living in

1 room of 5 Margaret Street,Clerkenwell. William is employed as a window cleaner.

In 1904 the family were now living at

152 York Road,London.

In 1905 the family had moved again, this time to

65 Keswick Street.

The 1911 census showed another change of address for the family, this time to 4 Millman Street, Holborn  London. Things were not going well for the family as William was not living at this address but had been admitted to

St Pancras Infirmary(poor law) Dartmouth Park Hill,Highgate N.

His occupation at this time was described as pianoforte repairer. Sadly William died some time later in this year.

Ada-Louisa was working as a domestic housekeeper, but this clearly wasn't bringing in enough money to support her family as Henry was admitted to the Holborn Workhouse in Holborn London on Saturday 27/05/1911 aged just 13.

At some point he was discharged from the workhouse as another record shows Henry being admitted to the

City Road workhouse on 16/11/1911 before being discharged the next day.

He enlisted in Exeter and was killed in action on 01/07/1916.

He was awarded the 1914-1918 British War and  Allied Victory medals.
