Born in Rusper Sussex in 1877.
He was baptised on 24/10/1877
His parents were John Ramsay(1851-1933) and
Mary Ann Brown (1850-1932). They married in 1875.
In the 1881 census, the family were recorded as living on South Street,Rusper,Sussex. John snr was a boot maker.
In the 1891 census, the family were still in Rusper,but now living at 4 Bellevue Cottage Main Street, John snr was still a boot maker.
In the 1901 census, John jnr had left home and was boarding at Norwood,East Lavington,West Sussex, whilst working as a general labourer.
At some point in the next ten years John enlisted into the Devonshire Regiment as in the 1911 census he was recorded as being a private in the 1st Devonshire Regiment and living at the barracks in Lucknow,North Tidmouth ,Andover Hampshire.
On 21/10/1912 he married Mabel Hale(21/04/1890-1959) at St Peters Church on the island of Jersey. He was now holding the rank of Corporal in the 1st Devonshire Regiment.
On 11/03/1915 their son
John Henry R was born(he died in 1996).
Johns date of disembarkation into France was on 25/07/1915. He was killed in action on 01/07/1916.
He was awarded the 1914-1915 Star,
the 1914-1918 British War and Allied Victory medals.
