6689 Private William Henry Venn

Born in Tiverton Devon in 1880.

His mother was Ellen Venn(1859-20/01/1929).There is no record of his father,but his mother did marry George Beer(25/12/1842-1912),a mariner in 1892.

He had 2 brothers,Sidney(born in 1883) and Charles(12/01/1887-1954). 

In the 1881,1891,and 1901 census' they were recorded as being inmates at the Tiverton Union Workhouse,Water Lane Tiverton Devon.

In 1910 William married

Ann Mogford Cotterell(born in 1882) and they had a daughter, Annie Mogford(1913-1948).

In the 1911 census they were recorded as living at

134 Chapel Street Tiverton Devon. William was employed by the borough council as a general labourer on a sewage farm.

He enlisted in Tiverton and his date of disembarkation into France was on 27/08/1914.

He was killed in action on 01/07/1916.

He was awarded the 1914-1915 Star,the 1914-1918 British War and Allied Victory medals.
