300136 Private Wilfred Smith

Born in Longwood, Huddersfield, Yorkshire in 1880.

His parents were Francis Albert Smith(1851-1927) and Margaret  Lindsay(1854-1927). They were married in 1877.

Wilfred had 4 brothers, John James (18/11/1877-1967),Ernest(born in 1882) Frank(1884-1904) and Walter(1886-1945).

He also had a sister Mary Alice(23/04/1891-1949).

In the 1881 census, the family were recorded as living in Clough Bottom, Longwood, Huddersfield. Francis was employed as a weaver.

The 1891 census shows that the family were now living at Newhouse, Golcar, Huddersfield. Francis was still working as a weaver.

In the 1901 census, it was recorded that both Francis and Wilfred were both working as weavers. The family had moved again and were now living at Leymoor Lop, Golcar, Huddersfield.  

In 1904. Wilfred married Carrie Whitwam(16/11/1881-1951) and they had 2 children, Winifred(08/01/1906-2000) and Frank Clifford(27/09/1907-1988).

In the 1911 Census it records Wilfred still employed as a weaver and they living at 77 Coronation Terrace, Golcar, Huddersfield.

Wilfred enlisted in Halifax.

He was killed in action on 18/03/1918.

Wilfred was awarded the 1914-1918 British War and Allied Victory medals.

His widow Carrie, was awarded a pension of 25/- 5d a week from 30/09/1918.

Carrie remarried in 1920 to Herbert Green(15/08/1888-1974).
