42495 Private Arthur Samuel Holland

Born on 27/06/1898 in New Catton, Norwich. He was baptised on 20/07/1898.

His parents were Clement Holland(1861-1921) and Anne Doyle(21/03/1865-1942). They were married on 17/08/1896.

This was Clements second marriage, his first was to Ellen Ryan (1859-1892),with whom he had 2 daughters, Margaret(born in 1884) and Sarah(born in 1885).

Arthur had 3 brothers, Clement(10/04/1897-1897),Patrick(10/04/1897-27/04/1942) and Frank Doyle(18/04/1908-24/02/1974).

He also had 3 sisters, Anne Kathleen(born in 1899), Hilda Mary(22/01/1902-20/06/1946) and Gladys Agatha(01/01/1904-1970).

In the 1901 census, the family were recorded as living at "The Hills" , Reedham, Norfolk. Clement was employed as a sub office postman, as having started working for the post office that year, having previously been a Colour Sergeant in the 4th Battalion Norfolk Regiment.      

 

In the 1911 census , the family were recorded as now living at 83, Beaconsfield Road, Norwich(the family would move 1 more time to 45 Patteson Road, Norwich). Clement was now employed as an agent for a charitable Organisation.

Arthur enlisted in Norwich originally as Private 328328 in The Cambridgeshire Regiment, but was later transferred as Private 42495 in the 11th Battalion Essex Regiment.

He was killed in action on 11/04/1918.

He was awarded the 1914-1918 British War and Allied Victory medals.

His mother was granted a pension on 8/- 6 d a week from 05/011/1918.
