     18463 Private Frederick Herbert Mann

Frederick Herbert Mann was born in 1890 in Liverpool. He was baptised on 20/04/1890.

His parents were Frederick Mann (1857-1933) and Margaret Brown (1858-10/11/1914). They were married on 27/09/1886.

Frederick had 4 brothers, Percy (09/05/1891-1945), Harold Alexander (23/11/1894-1946), Sydney (1896-1900),

Edgar (15/11/1897-1955).

He also had 2 sisters, Florence (born on 25/09/1887) and Nora Margaret (09/09/1900-1976).

In the 1891 census the family were recorded as living at 33 Ash Grove Wavertree, Liverpool. Frederick snr. Was employed

as a railway boilermaker, a job he would have throughout his working life.

The 1901 census shows the family still living in Ash Grove but having moved to number 99.

By the 1911 census, Frederick had joined his father as a railway boilermaker, while the family had once again moved and

were now living at 9 Ashfield, Wavertree, Liverpool.

When war broke out, Frederick was quick to join up, enlisting in Liverpool on 02/09/1914.

His medical details from that day are as follows.

Declared Age -  25 Years

Trade or Occupation – Boilermaker

Height – 5ft 6 ¾ inches    -   Weight – 133lbs

Chest measurement – girth when fully expanded – 34 ½ inches

                                                 Range of expansion - 2 ½ inches

Physical Development – Good

Complexion - Fresh   -  Eyes – Brown   -  Hair – Brown

Religious Denomination – Church of England.

Posted to 12th Battalion the King’s (Liverpool) on 08/09/1914

 

Appointed unpaid lance Corporal on 15/02/1915

Forfeited 1 days’ pay on 03/04/1915 for being absent from camp from 29/03/1915 to 30/05/1915.

Charged with drunkenness in barracks on 24/04/1915 and deprived of lance stripe on 26/04/1915.

After training, Frederick was sent to France on 24/07/1915. 

Awarded 14 days field punishment No.1 on 24/10/1916 for being absent without leave.

He was killed in action on 16/08/1917.

Frederick was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, 1914-1918 British War and Allied Victory medals.

 

Pension awarded to father of 10/- a week from 19/03/1918 on 11/03/1918
