Born on 31/08/1886 in Pontefract, Yorkshire. His parents were George Joseph Street (1850-1906) and
Elizabeth Murray (1847-1895). They were married on 10/04/1869.
James had 3 brothers, George William (25/03/1870-1923), Thomas Augustus (10/06/1875-03/08/1939) and
Charles John (29/12/1881-1932).
He also had 5 sisters, Maud Mary (16/10/1873-1933), Christina Adalene (10/01/1877-1961), Annie (born on 20/06/1880), Elizabeth Bertha (born on 28/06/1883) and Agnes (born on 26/01/1885).
In the 1891 census, the family were recorded as living at 27 Thirkill Street , Bowling, Bradford. His father was employed
as a dyers clerk.
The 1901 census shows that the family had moved addresses and were now living at 214 Upper Castle Street, Bradford.
George snr. was now employed as a mechanics store and bookkeeper.
By 1911, James was working as a labourer, having left the family home, the census that year records him living with his sister, Adalene and her husband at 123 Bramley Street, Bradford.
Around October of this same year, James married Elizabeth Holmes (19/04/1885 - 1922) and they went on to have 2 boys,
John (born on 07/10/1912) and James (27/09/1913 - 04/04/1994).
James enlisted in Bradford and was sent to France on 05/10/1914. He was reported missing presumed dead between the dates 22/10/1914 and 06/11/1914.
His widow, Elizabeth was awarded 18/6 a week from 02/08/1915 on 29/07/1915.
James was finally found at map reference 28.J.21.c.05.50 and identified by clothing and boots marked 7802. He was reburied in Sanctuary Wood Cemetery on 12/04/1927. Sadly his wife was never to learn that James had been found
having died in 1922.
James was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, the 1914-1918 British War and Allied Victory medals.
