Born in1888 in Metfield,Suffolk to Charles & Rachael Downing
of Shadow Barn Bungay,Suffolk( one of their sixteen children).
He was a cowman on a farm where his father was a horseman.
He enlisted into the Yorkshire Regiment(number 28404) at Masham before later transferring to "C" Battalion Machine Gun Corps(Heavy Branch). *
