Born on 06/10/1886 at 6.15pm in 8 Pitlochry Place, Norton Park, Edinburgh. His parents were William Leslie Gourlay (10/12/1859-20/04/1929) and Margaret Watt (11/11/1859-20/06/1945). They were married on 20/06/1883.
David had 2 brothers, James Black (07/03/1884-05/03/1963) and William (1889-08/11/1897). He also had a sister Helen Black (1894-08/09/1980).
In the 1891(Scottish) census, the family were recorded as living 54 Eskside Street, Edinburgh. William snr. was employed as a commercial traveller.
By the time of the 1901(Scottish) census, the family had moved to 120 Spring Gardens, Edinburgh. William snr. was now employed as a confectionary warehouseman. David was working a chemist message boy.

David enlisted in Edinburgh and was sent to France on 24/02/1915. He was killed in action on 16/11/1916.
He was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, the British War 1914-1918 and the Allied Victory medals.
