Another Fatality at Dundee Harbour

Another accident of a fatal character took place at Dundee Harbour yesterday afternoon, the victim being a carter named George Myles in the employment of Mr D.M. Sliddere, contractor.

This makes the fifth fatality which has occurred at the harbour within the past few weeks. Myles had arrived at the Eastern Wharf sheds with his lorry about three o’clock and began to load jute, being assisted by several other men. While in the act of placing a bale in position on the lorry, he slipped and fell over the end of the vehicle. The bale of jute tilted over and before Myles had time to rise from the ground it fell on his head and rendered him insensible. It was seen that he sustained very serious injuries and Dr. Steele Moon was summoned. On his arrival he stated that Myles skull was fractured, and the unfortunate man died in a short time. Myles was 36 years of age and leaves a widow and family, who live in Carmichael Street.

In the 1901(Scottish) census, the family were recorded as living at Hospital Wynd, 40 Dundee , St Clement, Forfarshire(Angus).

By the time of the 1911(Scottish) census, the family had separated, Andrew was boarding with his sister Helen and her husband at

29 Caldrum Street Dundee. His mother was also recorded visiting at the time of the census. Andrew was now working in a jute mill,

whilst his mother was employed as a housekeeper.

Andrew enlisted in Dundee and was sent to France on 03/04/1915. His original service number was 2611 and at some point he must have been wounded and before returning to action with a new service number 6762. Unfortunately his service records no longer seem to exist so I cannot prove this. He was killed in action on 13/11/1916.

He was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, the British War 1914-1918 and Allied Victory medals.
