Born in 1899 in Pendleton , Manchester , Lancashire, England. His parents were John Owen (born in 1869) and Emma Hall (born in 1868). They were married in 1892.

John had a sister, Lucy (born in 1893).

In the 1901 Census, the family were recorded as living at 27 Augusta Street, Pendleton, John Snr. was employed as a horse keeper

and Groom.

The 1911 Census also recorded the family living at the same address and John Snr. employed as a horse keeper for the Co-Op Society.

 

Cleary underage, John enlisted in Manchester and was sent to France on 02/05/1915. He was killed in action  on 13/11/1916.

His mother was awarded a pension on 12/06/1917 of 4/- a week from 19/06/1917.

John was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, the 1914-1918 British War and Allied Victory Medals.
