Born at 10.30pm on 14/07/1896 in Invergowrie, Perthshire, Scotland. His parents were Charles Stewart (born on 13/08/1870) and Margaret Henderson (16/11/1873-24/11/1920). They were married on 31/12/1894.
Charles had 2 brothers, John (born on 07/08/1905) and George Henderson (born on 12/05/1908). He also had 3 sisters, Isabella Michie (born on 08/07/1895), Mary Ann Milne (born on 22/08/1898) and Helen Henderson (born on 20/04/1902).
In the 1901(Scottish) Census, the family were recorded as living at Leoch Farm, Auchterhouse, Forfarshire. Charles Snr. was employed as an agricultural labourer in charge of horses.
In the 1911(Scottish) Census, the family were now recorded as living at Crusley Cottage, Fowlis Easter, Forfarshire. Charles was now working as an agricultural farm labourer. His father was now employed as a foreman/ploughman.
Charles enlisted in Dundee as 5031 Private in the 7th Battalion The Black Watch. For reasons unknown at a later date, his regimental number was changed to 6922. Charles had also been promoted to Lance Corporal. He was killed in action on 13/11/1916

Brave Dundee Soldier Falls
Mr and Mrs Charles Stewart, Berryhill by Dundee, have received intimation that their eldest son, Private Charles Stewart, of the
Black Watch, was killed in action on the 13th November.
Twenty years of age, Private Stewart enlisted a year ago, and was formerly in the employment of Mr J.B. Young as a farm servant at Berryhill.
In a letter to Private Stewart’s parents, his platoon officer refers to him as “Your brave young soldier son” He had him marked out for early promotion, and after his death, which he met while scaling the parapet of the second line of trenches, he was particularly mentioned for gallantry in all that he did during the recent attack. His untimely death was mourned by all his comrades.

Charles was awarded the 1914-1918 British War and Allied Victory medals.
