Born in 1898 in Culkenny County Antrim,Northern Ireland.
His father was Hugh Spence(born in 1871) and his mother was Eliza(born in 1879). They married in 1896.
Hugh had 2 brothers,John(born in 1900) and Robert(born in 1902). He also had 4 sisters,Eliza
(born in 1903),Sarah(born in 1905),Elle(born in 1907) and Catherine Violet(born in 1910).
In the Irish census taken on 31/03/1901,the family were recorded as living in
Cloughcorr, Ballintoy Co.Antrim.
Hugh senior was employed as a farm labourer.
In the Irish census taken on 02/04/1911,the family were now living in Coolkenny,Ramoan Co. Antrim and Hugh senior was now employed as a farmer.
Hugh enlisted in Ballycastle Co.Antrim and was killed in action on 07/06/1917.
