Born in Lurgan Co. Armagh in 1880.
He married Violet Hughes n 1912.
They lived at 7 Crossland Street, Belfast and had a son, James Edward(he died in 1989) and a daughter Sadie.
He enlisted in Belfast and was killed in action on 07-06-1917.

Gilliland – Killed in action on June 7, 1917.
Pte James Gilliland R.I.R., eldest and dearly beloved son of William J and Mary Gilliland.
Short was thy life, my darling son,
But peaceful be thy rest.
Mother misses you most of all,
Because she loved you the best.
Deeply regretted by his sorrowing Father and Mother, Sisters and Brother(the latter on active service).
