      24970 Private John Smith

10th Battalion Cheshire Regiment

              7th June 1917

Born in Macclesfield,Cheshire in 1886 and Christened on 14/11/1886.

His father was Charles Smith(born in 1856),a stone mason and his mother was Esther(nee Dawson(married 1884)),

a cotton weaver, who was born in 1864 and died in1953.

He had 1 sister,Gertrude Eunice(1889-1950).

In the 1891 census the family were recorded as living at

2 Crossall Street,Macclesfield.

In the 1901 census the family had moved to

18 Duke Street ,Macclesfield,though Esther was now a widow as Charles had died at some point after the previous census.John was employed as an errand boy.

In the 1911 census, the family had moved once again to

29 Roe Street Macclesfield(where Esther would live up until her death in 1953). John was employed as a house painter.  

In this year,John married Edith Naden(1881-1965).

They were recorded as living at

18 Stanley Street,Macclesfield.

He enlisted in Macclesfield and his dis-embarkation into France was on 25-12-1915.

He was killed in action on 07/06/1917.
