 43527 Rifleman Alfred Thomas Bird

      9th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles

                   7th June 1917

Born in Hackney,London in 1898.

In the 1911 census,he is recorded as living with his father Edward Charles Bird(1875-14-08-1955),a bricklayer,

his mother,Ellen Louise(nee Hill(married 1893))

at 85 Daubeney Road,Clapton Park London E5.

He was employed as a plumbers mate.

He had 4 brothers,Herbert William(Born in 1897),Alfred Thomas(born in 1898),John Charles(born in 1900) and Arthur Henry(born in 1905).

He aslo had 3 sisters,Rose Ellen(born in 1895),Lilly Louise(born in 1902) and Violet Ada (1906-1979).

 He originally enlisted in the Kings Royal Rifle Corps Special Reserve on 26-08-1914 in Shoreditch,aged just 16 and this could well be the reason for his discharge on 14-12-1914.

At his medical ,he was recorded as being 5ft 2/8 inches in height, weighing 115lbs with brown eyes and brown hair.

He was charged with being absent whilst on active service from tattoo on 04-10-1914 till 1.30pm on 08-10-1914.He was awarded 10 days confined to barracks and fined 5 days pay.

After his discharge he did re-enlist ,this time at Hackney as Private(7074) in the 17th Battalion London Regiment.

He was later transferred to the 9th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles as a Rifleman (43527) and was killed in action on 07-06-1917.
