7688 Private Joseph Ernest Brown

16th (Labour Company) Battalion

 The King's (Liverpool) Regiment

             5th July 1917 

Born in Beswick,Lancashire on 24-04-1876 and was baptised on 21-05-1876.

In the 1891 census ,he is recorded as living with his father,William Brown(1847-1892),an iron turner,his mother,Margaret Elizabeth (nee Catterall(married 19-05-1874),1849-1895 at 16 Phillips Park Road Manchester.

He was employed as an errand boy.

He had 2 brothers,Isaac Edward(1882-1973) and William Hindle(1888-1950).He also had a sister,

Elizabeth Ann (1878-1944).

On 01-12-1906 he married Florence Gertrude Tetlow(1883-06-02-1932). They went on to have 5 children; 
Florence Gertrude(1907-1964),Alice(1908-1973),

Ethel(1911-1977),Eva(1914-1985).

Their son,Ernest was born in June1917,but died in the same month.

In the 1911 census,he is recorded as being a moulder of rubber heels in a shoe factory and they lived at 8 Ilford Street Clayton, Manchester. they were to later move to no.5 in the same street.

He enlisted in Manchester and orignally joined as a Private(7688) in 16th (Labour Company) Battalion The King's (Liverpool) Regiment but was later transferred as a Lance Corporal (48037) to the 81st Company Labour Corps.

He was killed in action on 05-07-1917.
