9/15567 Rifleman Samuel Matier

  9th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles

              7th June 1917

Born in Shankill,Belfast County Antrim in 1896.

His father was James Matier(born in 1860) ,a gas fitter

and his mother was Sarah(nee Boyd(married 1888)),

who was born in 1867.

He had 3 brothers,James(born in 1899),Robert(born in 1903) and William John(born in 1908).

He also had 4 sisters,Emily(1899-27-12-1937),Mary(born in 1893),Sarah(born in 1901) and Elizabeth(born in 1906).

In the Irish census taken on 3103-1901,the family is recorded as living at 179 Snugville,Shankill,County Antrim.

His father was employed as a general labourer.

In the Irish census taken on 02-04-1911,the family were recorded as living at 25 Ainsworth Avenue,Belfast.

Samuel was employed as an apprentice fitter.

He enlisted in Belfast and his dis-embarkation into France was on 04-10-1915.

He was killed in action on 07-06-1917.
